3 Ways Organization Can Increase Productivity & Lower Procrastination
The following is a guest post with 3 ways organization can help increase productivity and lower procrastination from guest contributor, Erin from Sacred Space Organizing.
Being more productive is one of modern humanity’s biggest challenges. There’s an infinite number of stressors telling us to get this done, do that now, don’t miss the deadline. It’s enough to drive you crazy.
The worst part is, the more we have to do, the less we want to do it. Twenty-six percent of the population today suffers from procrastination. That’s a lot of people, especially considering the negative impacts, such as poor diets, heavier drinking, anxiety and depression.
Thankfully, there’s ways you can beat procrastination and become a productivity machine.
We’re going to go over how the simple act of organizing your space and your work can help you get things done today! Check out these tips on how to organize for optimization.
1. Boost Your Work Space
This applies to either your desk at work or your home office. Wherever you are, your desk’s arrangement plays a huge role in productivity. Let’s find out how to make it work for you instead of against you.
Start off with plants. Working with some green around you is scientifically proven to make you 15% more productive. Not to mention they’ll help boost your mood and lower stress levels. Check out this list of great desk plants that require minimal care.
Next, it’s time to add a little inspiration. Throw out old theories of minimalistic desk space; personalize your area however you want. It’ll make you comfortable, and in turn, happier to start working. A great way to add some of yourself to those bland cubicle walls is with inspiration pieces. Whether it’s a quote that speaks to you, or a photo of your dream life, pin it up! And when your mind starts to wander, peek at your inspiration pieces and remind yourself why you’re there.
These are just some bonus tips assuming that your desk is properly organized. I don’t have to tell you that clutter kills productivity faster than anything. If your desk is messy, you already know what to do.
2. Treat Your Computer Like Your Desk
Now that your desk is organized, let’s move onto your screen. If you’re like most people, it’s an unorganized arrangement of random folders and software you don’t even remember installing.
It’s time to get rid of all that. Go on a purging spree; delete and uninstall anything that no longer serves you. Once you’re done, don’t forget to empty the little trash bin!
Let me introduce you to some desktop apps that will actually help you. Software like Trello, Evernote, and Timeful will make you more productive than you ever thought possible. Check out this in-depth list of productivity apps that’ll lead you out of the dark world of procrastination.
3. Break Up Goals into Manageable Chunks
Maybe you’re working towards starting your own business. Or you have a giant project due at work. Whatever large goal you’re working towards, it probably seems impossible at the beginning.
There are so many things to do, so many moving parts; where do you even start?
Before you get too overwhelmed there are ways to overcome procrastination and increase productivity, so let’s break this down. Say you want to open a business of some sort. There are literally a million tasks you need to do in order to make that happen. Think about what you want to accomplish in a year. Have a working website? Open a storefront? Great.
Now think about how you could get closer to that by breaking up tasks into 12 chunks, one for each month. What would be considered a success that you could do in 6 months? Now break it down further into weeks. What could you get done every week to get you closer to that goal? Now, what about every day?
Separating your big dreams and projects into bite-size pieces makes it seem infinitely more doable. It eliminates the heart-stopping overwhelm and makes it actually seem possible. Isn’t that exciting?
These are just a few small things that can really help you overcome procrastination and increase productivity levels. Even if you just implement a couple of these ideas, I guarantee you’ll notice a difference in the way you work.
