This grand piano made from LEGO is fully playable

A grand piano would be a nice addition to any home, assuming it can actually fit inside your home. If you’re like me, who already has a hard time squeezing into his apartment without a massive musical instrument hogging all the space, LEGO’s latest product might be a better alternative.

The Danish toymaker has released a 3,662-piece set of a model grand piano that looks—and even plays—just like the real thing. It features 25 functioning keys, hammers, moving dampers and pedal, a lid that can be propped up, and even an adjustable bench.

If you’re not musically inclined, don’t worry, there’s an app that lets you auto-play songs, or even help you compose and record an original piece.

Although the LEGO model is only a fraction of the size of an actual grand piano, it proves to be just as beautifully intricate once you pop open the lid. Inside, the piano’s motor is both art and engineering, serving as an exquisite show piece and delicate musical instrument.

The concept for it came from music teacher Donny Chen, who proposed the idea to LEGO Ideas, a platform where enthusiasts get the chance to have their designs come to life. “When I first discovered LEGO Ideas, I knew I wanted to build something that not only combined my two passions, but also looked visually stunning,” said Chen.

Once the idea got approved, Chen then worked with LEGO designer Woon Tze Chee to refine the concept. “This is by far the most challenging model I’ve worked on. It’s so compact and so interconnected, and every measurement so precise that if you make one small change somewhere, it always causes a ripple effect and a chain reaction to the whole model,” said Woon.

Putting the set together will challenge any LEGO builder, but probably not as challenging as trying to fit a real grand piano through a door or window. It retails for $350 on the LEGO website.
