This is Why Sage Green is a Great Addition to Your Home Decor

What is it about mossy, sage-y greens lately? Why am I seeing this color everywhere? Maybe more importantly, why are the Apartment Therapy House Tours featuring this shade in some capacity being pinned more than anything else right now?

If you ask Erika Woelfel, vice president of color and creative services at Behr, this “Pinterest Green” phenomenon, as I’ve taken to calling it, has something to do with the fact that this earthy shade of green is a stable, soothing color derived from nature. “Using the color green in your home can evoke a strong sense of wellbeing, peace, and tranquility,” explains Woelfel. Moreover, if you’re feeling anxious, “Greens evoke a feeling of calm, making them great contenders for your home if you are looking to reduce stress,” adds Patrick O’Donnell, global ambassador for Farrow & Ball.

Given everything going on in the world right now, the popularity of this shade of green sounds about right. The color first started trending before the global pandemic hit—with people, increasingly bombarded by technology and craving the serenity that comes from, say, taking a meditative walk in the woods, enveloped in its lush flora. Now being stuck indoors has only made this desire to be among greenery stronger than ever, and this time around, the mosses and sages I’m seeing are a little more saturated than before.

“Typically, when we think of bringing nature in, our mind immediately goes to natural materials like flowers or plants,” says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams. “However, the colors of nature can also add so much life to a space.” 

In addition to bringing a dose of tranquility to homes, another benefit of decorating with green is its versatility. This shade plays nice with popular grays, whites, and beiges already in most homes. For anyone specifically looking to work green paint into their decor schemes, Woelfel recommends starting in a home office or bedroom. “These are the spaces where people are spending lots of time and may need an extra dose of rejuvenation,” she adds.

If paint feels like too much of a commitment, green furniture pieces or even accents like pillows, candles, and textiles can help connect you to the outdoors a bit, too. Woelfel loves seeing biophilic hues incorporated into everyday spaces like the bedroom and bathroom. She’s especially loving Behr’s Secret Meadow S360-6, a deep, earthy green. “A rich green like this promotes feelings of rest, rejuvenation, and relaxation—perfect for the bedroom,” she says.

O’Donnell describes Farrow & Ball’s Sap Green as an easy to use, almost olive shade. “It’s perfect for a relaxed bedroom aesthetic, teamed with rattan furniture, off-white bed linens, and a few well-chosen house plants to create a perfect ‘zen’ escape for a good night’s sleep,” he says. If you’re looking for something a bit moodier and darker, Green Smoke, as pictured above, is another option.

Instagram seems to be obsessed with the bedroom Sarah Sherman Samuel created for her son Archie using Sherwin-Williams’ Oakmoss SW-6180. “It’s a bold choice, but we’re predisposed to love this color because of its roots in nature,” says Wadden.
