Elle Fanning does not live in a grand palace or rule over a European country, but her wallpaper certainly invokes her regal character on “The Great.” The actor shared an Instagram post that showcased the interior of her San Fernando Valley home in Los Angeles in early July. And while her specialized pajama set (adorned with her pup’s face, also featured in the photo) is already charming in and of itself, Fanning’s baby blue brocade wallpaper manages to steal the show.

Set against clean white walls, the baby blue wallpaper features intricate white floral patterns. The luxe design certainly feels like the type of decor that could be seen on the set of her Hulu satire series “The Great.” Created by “The Favourite” screenwriter Tony McNamara, “The Great” is loosely based on the rise of Russia’s longest-ruling female leader Catherine the Great (Fanning). She came to power after she staged a coup d’etat against her husband, Peter III, Emperor of Russia (Nicholas Hoult), in the 1700s.

While the series has a modern twist, “The Great” channels the real-life opulence of the monarch’s Russian estate. Production designer Francesca di Mottola told Architectural Digest that furniture and decor had been sourced from antique markets from Belgium, France, Italy, and England—and all of which were reupholstered to mirror Catherine’s classical, baroque Russian winter palace. Costume designer Emma Fryer detailed the color coordination of Fanning’s outfits. “We decided that the color palette was going to be very soft tones of light blues for Catherine to symbolize her naiveté while Peter’s colors were very much darker in tone,” Fryer said. “His interiors were very dark and looked like the aftermath of a party.”

Given its dreamy light blue color palette, it wouldn’t be difficult to picture Fanning’s brocade wallpaper in Catherine the Great’s palatial estate—whether in the late 1700s or in modern-day 2020. Shop similar options below.
