California Tiered Landscaped Backyard Makeover

It can be hard to figure out what to do with a big, empty space—even more so when that big, empty space is a backyard filled with nothing but dirt. Rachel’s California yard started out just that way, with nothing by way of plantings or other features. And while there are plenty of ways to fill up a bare yard, it can be tough to know where to begin when you’re starting from scratch. Luckily, Rachel was able to bring in a little help by way of landscapers from Landmark Building, who were able to turn this wasteland into a multi-level dreamscape.

The landscapers created different levels for the yard before pouring concrete into giant molds to serve as stepping stones. At the top, they made space for two larger hangouts that fit both a dining space and a lounge area.

The results are California dreamy! The concrete and black palette is ultra-chic, and looks at home in the natural landscape—the plants are the stars here. Over time, the plants will grow and fill up the beds for an even greener look. The entire project fits into its surroundings so perfectly; it’s bold and full of style but neither flashy nor attention-demanding.

This is the same view at night, which shows the subtle play of light and shadows—so much more inviting and intriguing than floodlights and their ilk, and the lights themselves are so graceful. The understated lighting scheme is also quite considerate since it doesn’t flood the neighbors’ homes with intrusive brightness.

This is the stairway down from the house; the long, shallow steps encourage a leisurely pace. The wide variety of plant heights adds lots of interest, and little tuffs of plants between stepping stones show that no detail was too small in this remodel.

This is the seating area closest to the house. It’s set up well for chatting and admiring the view, and it’s a nice in-between area when the residents don’t want to trek all the way down to the dining table.
